The worlds of beauty and fashion have, and always will be, inextricably linked. For brands to stay ahead of the curve in today’s fast-paced and competitive luxury industry, makeup artists and fashion designers must work hand in hand to create their seasonal trends. Fortunately, Terry de Gunzburg has always understood this special relationship between the two worlds and that a woman’s style directly relates to her beauty image.
After abandoning a career in medicine to pursue makeup artistry, Terry worked with legendary fashion photographers Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin before meeting Yves Saint Laurent in 1985. Regarded by many as the founding father of contemporary fashion, the designer immediately saw something special in Terry and hired her as the brand’s International Makeup Designer. The next 15 years proved invaluable to the BY TERRY founder, as she was able to go behind the scenes of one of the biggest haute couture houses and discover what women want and need when it comes to makeup. It was here that she struck gold by inventing Touche Éclat, the magic golden pen which remains the bestselling beauty product of all time with one sold every ten seconds. As well as creating timeless products, it was at YSL that Terry also learnt to be bold and take risks, mixing unusual colour combinations together in order to create truly innovative products that had never before been seen on the market.
In 1998, she founded her cosmetics line BY TERRY and with this set herself apart from other beauty brands by creating the concept of ‘haute couleur’. Rather than taking a ‘one shade suits all approach’, her bespoke brand catered to women’s individual beauty needs. As Terry aptly puts it, “Beauty is not a stereotype, your personal style is your own signature, to be expressed day by day.” Because of this, Terry de Gunzburg went from being a makeup artist to something much more - she is a beauty designer.
