History in the Making
Galerie Vero Dodat
Nestled in the 1st arrondissement of Paris just off of rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau is the covered passage, Galerie Vero-Dodat. Built in 1826 during the Bourbon restoration dynasty, covered galleries were hugely popular city playgrounds for the new middle classes complete with public baths, bistros and billiards halls—by the mid-19th century there were over 150 passages in Paris alone. Today only 18 remain and Vero Dodat was left in decline until its restoration to neo-classical glory in 1997.
It was soon after that Terry discovered the almost-secret historical landmark and decided it was the perfect poetic location to open her flagship store at No.36 Housing the ‘Haute Création’ laboratory on the first floor where the ground-breaking formulas are developed, the address has become known as a factory of cosmetic excellence sitting side by side with some of the French capital’s most elegant boutiques and restaurants. No. 36 is also where customers come for Haute Couleur appointments—the ultimate in made-to-measure beauty.
During the first appointment, BY TERRY’s makeup artists will take chromatic measurements to identify the shade closest to your skin tone and the ideal formula for your individual complexion. This provides the starting point for the laboratory which will then spend three weeks developing a customised range of sample shades which are then ‘fitted’ at the second appointment. Adjustments will be made and two or three samples are selected for trial at home. When your choice has been finalised, BY TERRY will produce a year’s worth of your customised products guarding your unique codes preciously for whenever you want to use them next.
